Annapolis Has an Ice Cream Obsession

Every summer I find myself wondering the same thing...

How does downtown Annapolis support this many ice cream shops?

Within just a few blocks you have Storm Bros., Kilwins, Red Bean, Annapolis Ice Cream Company/Always Ice Cream, and even Chick & Ruth's with its famous Colossal Milkshake.

For a relatively small downtown, it's kind of ridiculous. And somehow...they all seem busy.

Next time you're walking around downtown, take a look. It feels like half the people on Main Street are carrying an ice cream cone.

I, for one, have absolutely no problem with it. If you know me, you know I'm an ice cream fiend.

Growing up, one of my favorite summer traditions was taking our little 16-foot Whaler into downtown, tying up at the free dinghy dock at the end of Ego Alley, grabbing Moose Tracks from Storm Bros., and eating it on the seawall while watching the boats go by.

Years later, that's exactly where I took my now-wife, Mary-Sean, on our first official date.

Ask anyone who grew up around Annapolis where they get their ice cream, and you'll probably get a passionate answer. People here are loyal. Storm Bros., Kilwins, Always Ice Cream...everyone has their spot, and they'll happily tell you why the others are wrong.

Even my own loyalty has been tested.

Former high school classmates of mine, Mark and Adam Cohen, started Always Ice Cream, and they've done an incredible job building it. They seem to be doubling down on Annapolis' ice cream obsession with new flavors all the time and new locations popping up around the county every few months.

Why Annapolis became so obsessed with ice cream, I have no idea.

Maybe it's because so many summer evenings end with a walk down Main Street. Maybe it's because so many of us grew up on the water and an ice cream stop naturally became part of the trip home. Or maybe it's just one of those traditions that quietly gets passed from one generation to the next.

Whatever the reason, going downtown and getting ice cream have become almost synonymous in Annapolis.

So now I'm curious...
